Learning graphic design from scratch

Graphic design is arranging text, image and space on a surface so that one specific message reaches one specific person, which makes the work deciding rather than drawing. Learning it starts with looking, then principles, then one tool, and finally a real job with a real constraint.

Graphic design five branches, five ways to fail

Nobody is good at all five. Job adverts are written as though someone is, and it is that expectation, not the designer, that delivers bad work.

What does a graphic designer actually do?

They decide. Graphic design means arranging text, image and empty space on a surface so that one specific message reaches one specific person. The exported file is the result of the work, not the work itself; the work is the set of decisions behind it.

Three decisions repeat in every project and the rest are details. First: what gets removed. A beginner keeps everything and then hunts for a layout that will fit it all. Second: what takes first rank, meaning that if the reader sees only one thing, what should that thing be. Third: what repeats, because repetition is what turns a handful of scattered pages into a brand.

Every real job also arrives with four constraints, and a good design is one that has come to terms with all four. The surface: how big it is and from what distance it will be seen. The reader: who they are and in what state they look at it, walking past on a street or sitting at a desk. Production: whether it will be printed or stay on a screen, and what the budget is. And the brand: the thing that already exists and that your design must not contradict.

Our position here is blunt: a client does not pay for the file, they pay for the decision, and the file is the receipt for it. Someone who only knows the software applies whatever change they are told to apply; a designer says this change breaks the message, and brings a reason. That second sentence is what sets the price of the work.

How many branches does this field split into?

Five branches, and in practice they mix far less than job adverts suggest. Brand identity: the logo, the palette, the type and the small book that tells everyone else how to use them. Print: catalogues, packaging, business cards, where colour mode, bleed and resolution start to matter and where, unlike the web, a mistake cannot be taken back. Digital and social: posts, banners and ads, at small sizes and on screens no two of which show colour the same way. Motion: the same design, plus time. And user interface: designing something that will be operated, not only looked at.

What gets said less often is that nobody is good at all five, and nobody needs to be. The branch is what decides which tool you work in, what format you export and where the job goes wrong. A print designer who hands over a file in RGB has handed over dull colours on paper, and at that point nothing can be done. A social designer who leaves fine detail in loses the design on a phone screen. These are not lapses of taste, they are lapses of branch.

Why does most of the work stay below the waterline?

Because the only thing a client sees is the final file, and that is the smallest piece of the job. Underneath it sit five layers, none of which show up in a portfolio and any of which can sink the project.

First the brief: what problem this design is meant to solve. A sentence like "I want a poster" is not a brief; "I want people walking past the shop to realise we are open on Saturdays too" is a brief. Second the constraints: size, viewing distance, print budget, where it will be mounted. Third the versions that were rejected, which in practice take most of the project time and are shown nowhere. Fourth the production spec: colour mode, bleed, the smallest size at which the logo is still legible. And fifth the handover: source files, the fonts and the right to use them, and who is able to edit this later.

The fifth layer causes more trouble than the rest and is talked about least. A logo is not a file; it is a family of files at different sizes and in different states, plus the rule for where each one is used. If your handover is a PNG, then six months later the client wants a shopfront sign, comes back, and you draw it again from nothing. And if the font you used carries no commercial licence, it is not your problem that ends there, it is the client problem that starts there.

What should I learn first?

Five rungs, in this order, and the order matters more than the speed.

The first rung is looking, the cheapest of them and the most ignored. Collect twenty designs that are doing their job well and write one sentence for each about why it works. The sentence has to be specific: "because only one thing is big and everything else is genuinely small" is a sentence, "because it is clean" is not. That one exercise, over a few weeks, is what makes it possible for you to talk about a design at all.

The second rung is the principles: hierarchy, contrast, alignment, whitespace and repetition. Learn them not as laws but as explanations, explanations of how the eye groups things. The third rung is colour and type, the two places where amateur work gives itself away most, and happily both of them take rules.

The fourth rung is one tool, only one, until you know its shortcuts without looking. And the fifth is a real job: for a real person, with a real constraint and feedback you will not enjoy. Practice without a client has a ceiling, because you write the brief and then you also approve it.

Most courses start at the fourth rung. That is why you know the tool and your work still looks amateur.

This ladder has an order and no timetable. Any number you hear for the length of a rung is a guess by someone who does not know you.

What can I practise with, at no cost?

Three free, open source applications cover all of the practice work, and the principles in this path are identical in all three. Inkscape for vectors, meaning logos, icons and anything to be printed large. GIMP for pixel images. And Penpot for page and interface layout, which is open source and can be self hosted. Figma also has a free plan and it is enough to start with.

Type does not have to be bought either, in order to practise. Google Fonts for Latin, and for Persian, Vazirmatn, published under the SIL Open Font License and carrying its own Persian digits. That second detail matters more than it looks: a font without Persian digits borrows them from another font, and at that moment their shape and height stop matching the rest of the sentence.

And there is one exercise that genuinely works: pick a good design, look at it properly, close it, and rebuild it from nothing without the original in front of you. Then put the two side by side. The gap you see is your list of lessons, and unlike watching a tutorial you discovered this list yourself, which is why it stays.

One blunt limit belongs here too: these free tools have no ceiling for learning, and they do have one for professional handover. A print ready file with the right colour profile, and exchanging files with a team working in something else, are the two places where sooner or later you have to make a decision.

How long until my eye starts working?

We will not give a number, because any number we gave would be made up. What can be said is that the work splits into two pieces moving at very different speeds, and courses sell the fast piece while implying it is all of it.

The fast piece is teachable: the vocabulary of the field takes a few weeks, one tool takes a month or two, and production knowledge settles after a handful of real jobs. The slow piece is taste, and taste is really memory: the memory of things you have seen and thought about. Memory cannot be downloaded, and that is precisely why no course shortens it.

So if somebody sells you a course that makes you a professional designer in a stated period, what they are really selling is the fast piece. There is nothing wrong with that, as long as you know where the rest has to come from: from looking, from rebuilding, and from taking on work. The only genuine shortcut is making that looking deliberate and regular instead of waiting for it to happen on its own.

The fast path, with AI

The first rung of this path, looking, is exactly where multimodal models help most and almost nobody uses them that way. What you want is not for the model to make a design for you; it is for it to break a good design down into its decisions so that you can rebuild it without looking at it. This takes judgement, so use a strong model rather than a cheap one, and our current pick lives in the AI section of this site.

  1. Pick a design that is doing the same job yours will do. A poster for an event, not "a nice poster". If the job differs the decisions differ, and the comparison stops meaning anything.
  2. Before you ask anything, write down yourself what is biggest, what repeats and in what order your eye moved. If you read the model answer first you can no longer compare fairly.
  3. Run the recipe below. The question is written so that the model has to list decisions rather than adjectives. If the answer comes back full of "modern" and "eye catching", you did not ask it properly.
  4. Close the original and build the design from nothing, using only that list of decisions. This is the hardest step and the one that works; with the original in view you are copying, not learning.
  5. Put the two side by side and write down the differences. Each difference is a lesson; practise those deliberately in the next piece, or the list stays only a list.

Copy-ready recipe

This image is a {job type: event poster / packaging / Instagram post} and the job it has to do is: {goal}.

Do not critique it and do not compliment it. Only list the decisions the designer made, in a form I could use to rebuild it without seeing this image:

1) In order, say what your attention landed on and in what sequence. Five items maximum.
2) Say what is largest and roughly how it relates to the second largest (approximate, in plain words, such as about twice).
3) Name everything that repeats more than once: shape, spacing, colour, angle.
4) Say what has been left out of this design that usually appears in comparable work.
5) Say how many notional lines the text is aligned to, and where those lines are.
6) Wherever you are not sure from the image, write "I do not know" and do not invent.

Give the output as a list, with no adjectives. Do not use the words "modern", "clean", "professional" or "eye catching".

Before you trust the output: The model reads pixels, not intent. It does not know what the brief was, what the budget was, or where this was going to be printed, so anything it says about "why" is a guess rather than information. There is one more thing that is easy to forget: it will break down a bad design with exactly the same confidence. Choosing what you put in front of it is on you, and that choice is half the exercise.

AI in this kind of work

While you are learning, AI is useful as a describer and a librarian and harmful as a maker. Describer means breaking a design down into its decisions; librarian means turning a vague client brief into a list of constraints. Maker means designing instead of you, which is precisely what takes the first rung away.

Tools that actually help

  • Gemini It reads images well and understands Persian itself, which makes it a fit for breaking down a Persian poster in Persian. Google own page says it works in over 230 countries and territories and more than 70 languages, and Iran is not on that list.
  • Claude Good for turning a vague client sentence into a written brief and a list of constraints, before you open a design tool at all. Iran is on neither of Anthropic two supported country lists; we read that off Anthropic own page.
  • ChatGPT The most common choice and acceptable for these same two jobs. We make no claim here about its availability or payment: OpenAI supported countries page answers our server with a 403, and we do not write down what we could not read ourselves.

Where it backfires

Two risks, and the first one is specifically for someone starting out. When you ask a model to make a design instead of rebuilding one, you skip exactly the stage that builds the eye: looking, deciding and getting it wrong. The output is also immediately better than your practice today, which is what makes it tempting. Our position is plain: while you are on the first and second rungs, leave image generation alone, and after that use it however you like.
The second risk is technical and legal. An image a model generates is not fit for a brand identity: it is not a vector, it does not scale to a shopfront sign, it does not work in one colour and it turns illegible at 16 pixels, while a logo has to survive all four. On top of that, images made with Google models carry the invisible SynthID mark, which Google itself says it can detect, so the assumption that nobody can tell is not a safe one. Where this advice stops

This lesson is a map, not the skill itself; nobody becomes a designer by reading it and it was never meant to do that. Two things are also deliberately left out. First print production: colour profiles, paper, bleed and what a given printer wants in a file are learned only after a few real jobs and a few conversations with the printer, and no page replaces that. Second taste, and the last section says why that takes years. And one point that gets said less often: if you need a logo once in your life, learning this field is the most expensive way to get one; commissioning it is cheaper and faster.

From our own work

An agency that sells graphic design and has almost no images on its own site is a decent illustration of this lesson opening claim: the work is decisions, not files. The entire asset folder of the rgb.ir theme today contains exactly one image file, a JPEG of about 68 KB built only for the link preview of proposals. Everything else you see is not an image: 55 icons printed straight into the page as SVG, and 52 infographic archetypes drawn in CSS, none of which load a single byte of image. That was a decision rather than a saving: an image has to be downloaded and it shifts the layout, and we wanted a text LCP.
And the one place on this site where we genuinely do make an image taught the below the waterline lesson itself. The share card for proposals is rendered on the server, and its first version used the GD library, which does not shape Persian at all and sets the letters detached and in the wrong order. What worked was Imagick with the Pango engine, because Pango is a text layout engine in its own right and handles right to left and letter joining properly; and to make it work, the Peyda font had to be converted from woff2 to ttf and installed in /usr/local/share/fonts/rgb. Three font files sit there, and without them the function stands aside. None of that is visible in the finished image, and all of it was the job.

Real follow-up questions

How is graphic design different from UI design?

Graphic design works on a surface the reader only looks at; UI design works on something the reader operates. That single difference changes two things: in an interface you also have to design the error, loading and empty states, and contrast stops being taste and becomes a number. The layout principles, though, are the same in both.

Do I need to buy a drawing tablet to start?

No, unless illustration is your line of work. All layout, type, geometric logos and vector work is done with a mouse, and most professional designers work that way too. A tablet becomes necessary when you want to draw by hand, and that is a separate speciality you can come to later.

I have no portfolio, how do I get the first job?

By making work that has a problem in it, not work that is pretty. Pick a real business in your own town, write its real brief, design against those constraints, then show both together: the problem and the answer. A client does not look at ten unrelated images; at one case with visible thinking behind it, they do.
