The short answer
Your SEO competitor is not necessarily the company you compete with in the market. An SEO competitor is any domain that comes up for the same keywords you are targeting, and that usually includes marketplaces, news sites and blogs that do not sell your product at all.
That distinction is exactly what makes this tool valuable. A team whose competitor list came out of a marketing meeting usually has three or four familiar names and plans content around them. The real list from the results page is almost always larger and carries names nobody expected, and it is those unexpected names that take the traffic.
Once you have the list, go to the domains close to your own size rather than the biggest name at the top. A competitor slightly ahead of you has both a keyword list you can follow and a link profile you can reproduce. Comparing yourself with a market giant only proves that they are bigger, which you already knew.
The logical next step after this tool is taking two or three domains from the list into the backlink gap. That takes you from knowing who your competitors are to knowing exactly where you should be getting links, and the second one is what turns directly into work.
What you get back
What each output column actually means. Read this before your first run so you do not misread a number.
- Shared keywords
- The number of keywords both you and that competitor rank for in Google.
Where the data comes from
Uses DataForSEO Labs competitors_domain, US market/google.com only, since Labs does not currently cover Iran; for most Iranian domains it returns no result, and this is shown honestly.
When it helps
To identify your real SEO competitors (not just business competitors) before planning content or link-building.
Where it does not help
This tool sits on a database covering only the US market and google.com, so for most Iranian domains it returns nothing and we show that honestly rather than manufacturing a guessed list. If your domain is Iranian, the correct substitute is link competitors: it is based on referring-domain overlap rather than keywords, and for exactly that reason it does not depend on location and works for .ir. The second limitation is conceptual: keyword overlap does not mean real competition. A general encyclopedia may share hundreds of keywords with you without ever taking a customer from you.
One thing we learned using it
An empty output for an Iranian domain means we have no data, not that no competitors exist. In practice the difference is large, because a team reading an empty result as therefore we have no competitors makes exactly the mistake this tool was meant to prevent. That is why we show it empty rather than as zero, and point to the substitute tool right there.
What it costs
No monthly subscription. You top up a wallet and the price of a run is printed on the button before you press it; if you never run it, nothing is deducted.
Questions about this tool
It is empty for my Iranian site, what should I do?
Go to link competitors. That tool measures referring-domain overlap instead of keywords, and because that data does not depend on location it returns a real result for .ir domains too.
Why is a site that is not my competitor at all on the list?
Because the criterion is keyword overlap, not commercial rivalry. A news site or an encyclopedia can share many keywords with you. Set those rows aside and focus on domains that genuinely sell what you sell.
How many competitors should I take seriously?
Two or three. More than that does not turn into a plan in practice. Pick the ones close to your own size and slightly ahead, because their to-do list is actually executable.
